Lyrics with Laura

By Laura Valentine

With the Summit coming up on Thursday, we’re thrilled to announce the musical guests performing at our Kickoff Reception: Grammy-nominated country artist Mickey Guyton and New York celebrity DJ Mad Marj!

Mickey Guyton is from Arlington, TX, and she released her first EP – self-titled with lead single “Better Than You Left Me” – in 2015.  She is the first Black female solo artist to be nominated for a Grammy in the country category.  Upon being nominated, she issued a powerful statement that exemplifies why we consider her an honorary Engage Woman:

“This award is just so much bigger than just the Grammy nomination for me. This award is for Black women, for every single woman that has felt unseen and unheard and put in a corner and not acknowledged.”

DJ Mad Marj is a celebrity DJ from New York City who has spun at everything from local radio stations during college to Dolce & Gabbana and Tiffany & Co. shows more recently.  She is known to spin a wide variety of music – everything from “Flock of Seagulls to Rihanna” – and she has publicly promised that she “can get anyone to dance.” I doubt she’ll have any problems fulfilling that promise on Wednesday. I’ll see you on the dance floor!

While we don’t know exactly what Mickey will sing on Wednesday, we hope we hear some of these fan favorites:

  1. Black Like Me
  2. Better Than You Left Me
  3. Heaven Down Here
  4. Remember Her Name
  5. All American

The Thread Playlist is now updated with Mickey’s additions! Also – her latest album, Remember Her Name, just came out on September 24th.  You can listen to the whole thing here.
